Healthy Eating for Cancer Prevention

The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and other plant foods to lower your risk for many cancers.

There are lots of ways to get these healthy foods in your diet. It’s best to try to eat foods that are a variety of colors, so that you are getting as many nutrients as possible in your diet.

Foods that are not helpful for fighting cancer include processed foods, sugar and refines carbohydrates, and red meat.

Below, you can see ideas for how to incorporate a healthy snack into your day.

Outrun Cancer

Cancer. It’s a scary word. There’s a lot you can’t control when it comes to cancer, but there are a lot of things that you can. Some things you can do are to make sure you are getting enough exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, but there are a lot of ways you can achieve this goal! Think about what you enjoy doing and grab a friend to keep you motivated!

Make changes slowly by taking the stairs or parking a little further away than you need to. Keep track of your steps, and join our Tuesday Steps Challenge through Virgin Pulse! Click here for information on how Trilogy offers discounted gym memberships at select Planet Fitness and YMCA locations.

Hydrate Like a Champion

There is evidence staying hydrated can help lower your risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer. Overhydration and underhydration both have a negative impact, and it is important to strike a good balance.

If you are younger, the best recommendation is to drink when you are thirsty. It’s important to drink water, tea, or black coffee rather than sugar-sweetened beverages to get the best benefit. If you want to spice up your water life, add fruit, or try sugar-free carbonated water. Check out the fruit-flavored water on Water Wednesday (9/15) at your campus!

For more information, check out the Week to Beat Cancer hydration challenge on Wednesday (9/15).
